Matt Wallace is a filmmaker based in Melbourne, Australia. He has written and directed a number of projects, including the recent webseries Hot Bread (in conjunction with Screen Australia) and a number of narrative shorts.
Trivita Winataputri is an emerging Indonesian filmmaker based in Melbourne, Australia. 'You, Me, and That Chair' is the first short she wrote and directed. Previously, she produced the short film titled Men and their Birds, as part of 2022 Europe on Screen film festival in Jakarta.
“Kau, Aku, dan Kursi Itu” (You, Me, and That Chair) was inspired by a poem written by my father. The poem, initially penned as a love letter from him to my younger brother who was leaving home to study abroad, serves as the creative core of our film.
My brother’s departure from home prompted my father to revisit memories of ordinary moments they’ve shared over the years – arguing over football matches, solving mathematical formulas, and sharing stories over the dining table.
The poem and film both serves as a reflection on the shared spaces where we converse, interact, and tell stories with our loved ones, and how the objects within them hold the timestamp of our lives. Chairs and furnitures act as silent witnesses to our everyday lives and our changing relationships to memory.
The film is an invitation to reflect on our own relationships with our parents, to embrace the fleeting nature of time, and to treasure the everyday moments that shape our lives.
